Dean A. Ramos, CFA
Dean Ramos is currently Chief Economist-Corporate Strategy at Applied Materials, where he translates macroeconomics and cross-asset analysis into implications for the business. He advises the firm's senior decision makers using macroeconomic frameworks to address strategic risks, capital allocation, technology shifts, market sizing and financial strategy. Previously, he operated as an independent strategist, advisor and economist, researching, writing and consulting via his platform at Arka Kapital, LLC. Since becoming an institutional investor at American Express Asset Management (Columbia Threadneedle), he spent nearly 20 years directly investing in the Americas, Europe and Asia, managing multiple investment strategies and serving as global sector head for technology and telecom investments on a platform that peaked AUM over $20B US and won 9 Lipper Awards. He began in finance analyzing capital allocation for one of the world's largest retailers (Target) then moved to investment banking, where he was head of financial planning and analysis for one of the largest US regional broker/dealers (predecessor of the US branch of RBC). Later, as a managing director, he was the senior publishing analyst covering companies in the technology and consumer industries. There, he built a successful research and advisory practice geared toward institutional asset management clients. He has been an Adjunct Professor in Finance at the Graduate Business School at Hamline University for 5 years, guest lectured on global markets at the Stockholm School of Economics, Riga, and presented to Semi on the sovereign strategic importance of semiconductors. Mr. Ramos has held the Chartered Financial Analyst designation since 1993. He was educated at the Universidad de Salamanca, the Universidad Iberoamericana and holds bachelors and MBA degrees from the University of Minnesota. He is on the board of the Latvian American Chamber of Commerce, the leading cross-border trade and investment group partnering with the Economics Ministry of Latvia. He holds dual US and Latvian/EU citizenship.
